What do I wear?

Uniform
You must attend parade nights in your uniform. As a new cadet, until you are issued with your uniform please attend parade nights in smart civilian clothes.  It will be approximately four weeks before you are measured and fitted with your ATC uniform, the main elements of which (trousers or a skirt, shirts, ties, jumpers, brassard and 'JelTex' weatherproof jacket) are supplied free of charge while you are a member of the Corps. Male cadets will need to provide their own cadet shoes and black socks and female cadets will need female cadet shoes, 'Barely Black' 15 denier tights and a hair net. Male cadets must also have a neat and tidy hair cut.

You will be shown how to wear and look after your uniform, and should take pride in wearing and keeping your uniform in good condition. If you leave the squadron you must return all free issue items of clothing, clean and in good condition.s

How to iron your trousers:

  • heat the iron to a HOT setting
  • place the front crease of one leg onto the ironing board
  • flatten the fabric and pull the crease firmly at both ends
  • place a damp cotton cloth over the crease
  • place the iron over the damp cloth and press firmly, making sure you don't let the iron come into contact with the trouser fabric, then lift the iron and move it to the next section
  • next, press the front crease on the other trouser leg
  • press the creases on the backs of each trouser leg

How to iron your shirt:

  • heat the iron to a MEDIUM setting
  • iron the inside of the collar, from the outside in
  • lay the yoke (the section of shirt which joins the collar to the back) flat on the board, and iron it
  • iron the sleeve cuffs on the inside only
  • lay one sleeve at a time on the ironing board, and make sure that the inside seam is straight. Iron the crease firmly, spraying it with water if necessary
  • iron the remainder of the sleeve, first on the back then on the front, pulling the crease firmly as you do it
  • unbutton the epaulettes and iron them
  • lay the back of the shirt flat on the ironing board and iron it (you'll probably have to move it at least once to do it)
  • lay the buttoned front of the shirt flat on the board and iron it
  • lay the buttonholed front of the shirt flat on the board and iron it

You should now have a perfectly ironed shirt!

How to shape your beret:

  • immerse the beret first in hot then in cold water until it's soaked, but don't let the inner band get wet
  • place it on your head and mould it so that all the spare material ends up pulled down over your right ear and as flat as possible
  • take it off carefully, making sure that it keeps its shape, and allow it to dry naturally

How to polish your shoes:
First, you'll need:

  • a tin of black shoe polish (Kiwi Black (not Parade Gloss) or Cherry Blossom)
  • a cloth (preferably cotton) or cotton wool pads
  • water
  • a lighter or a candle

Wrap the cloth around your index finger, dip it into the water (don't soak it) and then add a small amount of shoe polish. Rub the polish onto the shoe in a circular motion until it's well rubbed in, then repeat until you've covered the whole shoe. Once you've done that, dip the cloth in water again and polish the leather, again using a circular motion, until you've achieved a high shine. If you haven't polished your shoes before, it may take a few attempts before you get the 'mirror' shine you're aiming for.

After a while the polish on your shoes will begin to build up, crack and lose its shine. If this happens, you'll need to remove the old polish and start again. Do this by CAREFULLY and GENTLY heating the toecap using a lighter or a candle, then rubbing away the old polish as it melts. Continue doing this until you're back to the leather, then begin to polish them again using the method above.

How to tie a windsor knot
This is the regulation knot for tying the black tie, and is quite an easy knot (once you know how!).

STEP 1

Place the tie around your neck with the narrow end (B) shorter than the wide end (A) and cross A over B.

STEP 2

Pass A underneath B and bring it up through the loop between the collar of the shirt and the tie and bring it down to the front.

STEP 3

Pass A underneath B and to the left (with the underside of the tie facing forwards) and pass it DOWN through the loop between the collar and tie.

STEP 4

Bring A across the front of B, from the left to the right.

STEP 5

Pass A upwards through the loop.

STEP 6

Bring A forwards and down, and pass it through the knot at the front.

STEP 7

Tighten the knot with both hands and draw it up close to the collar
