Staff and Cadets to take
part in Cancer Research's Race For Life
A speedy diagnosis meant a
happy outcome when an Oldham cadet instructor found she had thyroid
cancer.

And now Kirstyanne Sharkey-Daly
(23) plans to run three miles around Alexandra Park to raise money
to beat all types of cancer.
She is taking part in the Oldham
Race for Life on June 15, in aid of Cancer Research, and has been to
the gym to see what her finish time might be.
Kirstyanne, who
teaches at the Oldham Air Training Corps centre in Wellyhole Street,
Oldham, walked the three mile (five kilometre) course in an hour
last year — the first time she had taken part in the all-women
event.
She said: “I’ve joined a gym and tried running the
distance which took 36 minutes — so I’ll try and aim for somewhere
in between.”
Kirstyanne, who lives just over the Oldham
border in Clayton, and works for an internet company, found she had
a lump in her throat when she was 18. It made it painful for her to
eat or swallow.
She said: “I just woke up with it one day,
and it was about four inches long and an inch high. I was told it
was a cyst.”
But doctors later discovered it was cancerous
and she was operated on for papillary cancer of the thyroid, and is
still on medication.
Kirstyanne, who became a cadet when she
was 13 and has been an instructor for six years, feels extremely
lucky that she didn’t have to go through chemotherapy and
radiotherapy.
She says she is taking part in Race for Life to
help people who are less fortunate in their personal battles with
cancer.
Imogen Johnson, organiser of the Oldham race, said:
“Kirstyanne has also been absolutely fantastic in recruiting people
to take part in the event and also has recruited a number of her
males in her squadron to come along and volunteer on the day. They
will be lining the course to cheer all the participants
on.”
