January's News From 2200
(Oldham) Squadron
On the 14th December 2007, Cadet
Richards, Corporal Frost and Flight Sergeant Scott along with two
members of staff from the squadron travelled with a number of other
cadets and staff from the wing to RAF Linton-on-Ouse to attend one
of the trial Aerospace camps that have been running.
Cadets
were collected from Ashton Squadron (247) at 2pm by coach and from
there we made our way to the Station. We arrived at around
5pm, and were taken straight to the block and allocated rooms so all
baggage could be left safely whilst the initial camp briefing was
done. Once the briefing was done all cadets piled into the
cars and minibus and were taken to a local restaurant to get some
tea. Lights out was at 10.30pm and it was an early start on
Saturday morning.
Cadets were all up at 6.30am Saturday
morning and were in uniform and ready for breakfast by 7.30.
After a quick inspection by the Adult Sergeant cadets made their way
over to the Airmens Mess where they all had a full English breakfast
to provide them with all the fuel for a busy day. After
breakfast, while two groups travelled to RAF Church Fenton to attend
9 AEF and take part in some leadership exercises as well as try to
get a flight. Two groups stayed back at RAF Linton-on-Ouse and
one group went flying whilst the other group got to try out the new
Flight Simulator and then they swapped over.
Once all the
cadets had returned from their day time activites, they went for tea
and then attended an evening briefing ready to take part in a Night
exercise which consisted of the four teams having to navigate their
way unseen through the darkness across part of the base to find an
objective and return back to the check point with it, again unheard
and unseen. This was very much enjoyed by staff and cadets a
like. On Sunday the groups swapped and the cadets that had
travelled to RAF Church Fenton stayed with staff at RAF
Linton-on-Ouse and vice versa. Once all the activites were
complete on Sunday afternoon the cadets all boarded the coach and
travelled back to Squadrons ready to go home to parents
On Sunday 2nd December 2007, 11
Cadets from Oldham 2200 Squadron all got the opportunity to go
flying at 10 AEF (RAF Woodvale).
All 11 Cadets were at the
squadron ready and waiting for the coach at 7am Sunday morning, some
collected by staff, others brought down by parents, all excited
about the day as 10 of them have never flown before.
The coach arrived and once all
staff and cadets were at the squadron, we boarded and set off to RAF
Woodvale near Liverpool.
When we
arrived at RAF Woodvale we were told that the winds were that bad it
was possible that none of the cadets would get to fly as the wind
speed was higher than the level set for safety reasons, however,
soon after the pilots had come back and said it was okay to get some
of the cadets kitted up and ready for their first ever flight in
the Grob Tutor.
All cadets going up for their first
flight generally go up with a look of anxiety on their face, and
come back down grinning from ear to ear as they want to do it all
again!
Unfortunately as the day progressed the wind speed
gradually increased and went past the safe limit again which called
a halt to all Flights for safety reasons.
Some of the cadets didn't get to fly
due to this and were sorely dissapointed - although they will be
first in line for places on the next set of Flights the squadron
gets allocated to make sure they don't miss out.
So after an early
start and a long day we cleaned the room used and then travelled
back by coach to awaiting parents back at the squadron who came in
for a cup of tea or coffee before going home. |
